Family story begins in 1897, when Petar Dragich came to America from Crikvenica – Croatia. Peter brought his eldest son Nick to Usa, and in 1913 he sent for the rest of the family and moved to Seattle. He also sponsored many friends and fishermens from Crikvenica and Bakar area to come to America.
Petar Dragich is an inventor of purse-seining (a form of fishing using nets) on the West Coast.
Dragich invention is very important for nowadays fisherman. Until Dragić’s invention, tuna was caught only on coastal tuna traps using standing coastal tuna traps and coastal nets. A new method of catching tuna using a boat and a special net made fishing independent of the coasts and possible even in the open sea. Already in the initial stages of experimentation, the number of fish caught by Dragić’s method could be up to seven times higher than before.
His family still runs a famous fish market in San Pedro California. Quality Seafood, Inc. – Historic Los Angeles Seafood Market
Peter Dragich is also mentioned in the book Croatia in 30 stories as a Croatian descendent
